10 Days Houeixay – Pakbeng – Luang Prabang - Xieng Khuang – Vang Vieng– Vientiane


Day 01    CHIANG KHONG – HOUEIXAY – PAKBENG                    L-D
    Please not later than 08:30AM Individual arrival at Houeixay border point. Transfer to the local pier just outside town. Embark on a traditional boat to Pakbeng. En route, stop over to visit Lao Lu at Ban Pak Tha and Hmong village at Ban Houei Lumpane
Lunch on board
Arrive in Pakbeng end of afternoon and transfer to the hotel
    Dinner and accommodation at your lode overlooking the Mekong River

Day 02    PAKBENG – PAK OU CAVE – LUANG PRABANG                B-L-D
Breakfast at your lodge
Embark on a traditional boat to Luang Prabang. En route, stop over to visit Ban Khok Ek, a traditional Lu village
Lunch on board
Afternoon, stop at Lao Loum villages and learn about the local peoples way of life. Before arriving in Luang Prabang, visit the sacred Buddha caves of Tham Ting and Tham Phoum, where hundreds of Buddha statues are enshrined
Arrive in Luang Prabang and transfer to the hotel

Day 03     LUANG PRABANG                                B-L-D
Watch Tagbat, the monks’ rounds, early in the morning. It is a ritual that is truly part of Lao people’s life and offers a memorable experience and great snapshots. Your guide will explain how to follow the strict customs and rules involved.
Breakfast at your hotel
Full day visit of the old city. Start your visit with Vat Visoun (today Buddhist art museum) and That Makmo, the stupa shaped like a watermelon. Proceed to Vat Mai with its five tiered roof and exquisitely carved veranda. Take a walk in the old city and visit Vat Sene, the perfect place to meditate
Lunch at a local restaurant
Afternoon continue your visit with Vat Xieng Thong at the tip of the peninsula. The oldest and most beautiful temple of the UNESCO World heritage town dates back from the 16th century. The roof sweep low to the ground and glass colored panels adorn the walls of the chapels; see the residential neighborhoods of the peninsular, before climbing up to Phousi hill for a view over the city, its surroundings and the Mekong River

Day 04        LUANG PRABANG – KUANGSI – LUANG PRABANG                 B-L-D
Breakfast at your hotel
    Visit of the Royal Palace Museum housing  the most important treasures of Laos’ recent past. Excursion by car to Kuangsi waterfall 32 kms to the west of Luang Prabang. On the way, visit the Hmong village Ban Na Ouane. Short walk through the forest to the waterfall. After enjoying the scenery, take a swim in one of the nearby clear pools. Below the tiered limestone pools lies the Khmu village Ban Thapene. Khmu men are especially good basket weavers and can sometimes be watched crafting

DAY 05        LUANG PRABANG – XIENGKHOUANG ‘’ BY OVERLAND ‘’            B-L-D
    Breakfast at your hotel
Leave Luang Prabang along the mountainous road with beautiful panorama views. Along the road you will see mainly Khmu and Hmong villages. After a first long ascent stop at Kiukhacham for a refreshment
Lunch stop at Phoukhoun, the junction of Route 13 and Route 7, connecting Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Phonsavan. You will pass many large Hmong villages built along high crests. Eventually, the mountains give way to small hills. Arrive on the Plateau of Xieng Khuang, where bomb craters still scar the barren landscape, stop at Nong Tang lake where local villagers fish
Arrive in Phonesavan and transfer to your hotel for check in

DAY 06        XIENG KHOUANG / PLAIN OF JARS                         B-L-D
Breakfast at your hotel
Start your visit of the Plain of Jars with monolithic site no. 2 located on two hill tops. Continue to site no. 3 located amidst rice fields. Drive on to Muang Khoun, the ancient Tai Phouan Capital destroyed during the second Indochina war. The ruins of Vat Piavat and That Foun are the only remainings of a significant past

Return to Phonsavan passing numerous large Hmong settlements. Arrive at Jar site no. 1 featuring the greatest number of jars and the largest monoliths in size.

DAY 07    XIENGKHOUANG – VANG VIENG ‘’ BY OVERLAND ‘’            B-L-D
Breakfast at your hotel
Leave Phonesavan for Vang Vieng by road. Enjoy the vista of deep valleys and the Hmong villages along the ridges
Lunch at a local restaurant
Make a stop at Phatang (17 km north of Vang Vieng). From the village temple you will get an outstanding view over the mountains. In the afternoon arrive at Vang Vieng famous for its beautiful landscape and limestone karsts. Visit Tham Chang cave with its stunning view over the valley. Take a small boat on the Nam Song River amid beautiful scenery before transfer to your hotel for check in

DAY 08    VANG VIENG – VIENTIANE ‘’ BY OVERLAND ‘’                B-L-D
Breakfast at your hotel
Drive to Vientiane; leave the karstic mountains for the rich plain of the Mekong.
On the way, stop at Nam Ngum Dam and embark on a boat for a one hour tour on the lake among small islands.
Lunch on board
Afternoon drive to Keun, a salt extraction village. Continue to Vientiane, arrive and check in at your hotel

Day 09        VIENTIANE                                B-L-D
Breakfast at your hotel
Start the day with a visit of Vat Sisaket, the oldest monastery in Vientiane, built in 1818. Continue to nearby Ho Phrakeo, the former Royal temple, now a Museum of buddhist art and sculpture. Visit Talat Sao to buy Lao textiles and basketry as souvenirs
Lunch at a local restaurant
Afternoon proceeds to That Luang with its golden stupa in the characteristic banana flower shape – it is the most revered shrine in Laos. Stop at Patouxay (the Victory Monument) for a view of the city. Proceed to That Dam Stupa and walk to the Nam Phou Square marking the centre of town. Be sure to explore the streets leading to the Mekong and take a walk on the riverbank in the late afternoon
